Dramatic Variations in Climate Affecting China’s Economy

Climate change is posing difficulties for China. At one place, Northern Chinese provinces are experiencing dry ups, the southern part of the country is dealing with floods.

Northern China's Henan Province is one of the top grain producers of the country, but the province is going through economic losses of 7.3 billion renminbi due to drought. Apart fromit, Liaoning Province is experiencing its worst drought since 1951.

On the other side, heavy rainfall in July had battered several cities of Southern China. The flash floods had killed more than 34 people. Earlier, Typhoon Rammasun, the strongest storm of China's history, had killed many people and triggered more floods.

The climate change is considered to be the reason behind floods in Southern China and severe drought in Northern provinces. Fourth Assessment Report of The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had forecasted an increase in extreme rains and floods in southern region and a decrease in rainfall in the northern states.

Meanwhile, Intergovernmental Panel predicts that rainfall and floods will continue to pose difficulties for the country. Both villages and cities are put in the danger zone. Shanghai, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Tianjin may face various kinds of climate change problems.

IPCC also said that due to drought in Northern provinces, annual economic losses will be between $1.1 and 1.7 billion.
