Cranberry products can’t cure UTIs: new research reveals

Once-promising cranberry cures are not as efficient in preventing or curing chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs) as many believe, a new research revealed.

In a randomized controlled trial, a team of researchers distributed volunteers into two groups. Patients with UTI issues in one group took cranberry capsules, while patients in the other group were given placebo pills.

The researchers were surprised to find that those who took cranberry capsules did not protect themselves from UTI problems any more than those who took placebo pills.

Lead researcher Dr. Manisha Juthani-Mehta said in a statement, “Although our study was only in nursing home women, many other studies have been done in other populations, which have not shown a benefit.”

The researchers concluded that spending money on cranberry capsules or other products for preventing UTIs doesn’t seem worthwhile. However, those who enjoy eating cranberries or drinking cranberry juice may keep on doing so, without expecting benefits for preventing UTIs.

The disappointing findings also pointed to the urgency to look for new cures to treat UTIs. Antibiotics can cure UTIs, but their overuse can lead to antibiotic resistant bacteria, leading to hard-to-treat illnesses.
