Australia might consider threatened species trust

The authorities in Australia have indicated that it is considering creating a Zealand-style threatened species trust that funded by the private sector in order to help protect endangered species.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt said that the government alone cannot fund the entire efforts to save protected species in order to save them from extinction and private sector needs to step in with funding's and other support. Hunt said that he believes that the New Zealand model is a good example for Australia.

He was speaking on the side-lines of the National Threatened Species Summit in Melbourne on Thursday.WWF-Australia species manager Darren Grover urged the federal government to increae efforts to protect endangered species in the country.

"The Threatened Species Summit is an opportunity to explore solutions and discuss practical ways to halt Australia's wildlife crisis at a time when our threatened species are under more pressure than ever before," he said.

He also said that Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt has done well in spreading awareness about the endangered species but pointed out that strong actions are required to protect species.
