Wal-Mart testing new grocery delivery technology

Wal-Mart is planning an innovative delivery system in order to compete with Amazon and other retailers. Marking no limits in the field of grocery delivery services, Walmart has announced that it is testing a new service that will deliver the ordered items all the way to the customer’s kitchen and even unload the products into the refrigerator.

To offer the new service in a bid to get a new advantage in grocery delivery over rivals like Amazon, Walmart has partnered with the tech firm August Home.

Wal-Mart has decided that it will soon be raising pay scale of its workers as the American retailer does not want to lose workers to competitors. The multinational retail cooperation made this announcement on Wednesday. As per a recently made announcement, Wal-Mart's lowest paid part-time employees will receive at least $10 an hour by 2016. The average full-time worker with Wal-Mart will earn $13 an hour.

Market experts said the modest raises that Wal-Mart will give to its lowest-paid workers have shown some sign of hope for lower-wage workers in other companies and industries.

US retail sales decline despite consumers saving more on gas costs

The US retail sales continued the slide in January as consumers tightened their wallets despite saving money on the gas costs. As the gas prices dropped and auto sales also weakened, the retail sales remained low during December and January.

However, Americans cranked up their spending to some extent in consumer durables and other retail categories, apart from those volatile categories. According to the Commerce Department, in January, retail sales declined 0.8% after a 0.9% decrease in December.

According to the website of the troubled electronics retailer the list of 'possible closure' marked stores include outlets in Rio Grande City, Harlingen, McAllen and Brownsville.

Multinational e-commerce company Zalando SE had earlier forecasted that it will end the year with some profits. Now, the company has traded above its initial public offering price for the first time since it made the stock market debut in the last month. Shares of the Germany-based Zalando have risen about 11% to about 22.36 euros. The company's 14% of shares gain disappeared on the first day of trading. After that, they had been consistently trading below the 21.50-euro IPO price.

Converse sues 31 retailers over Chuck Taylor Knockoffs

Converse, the American-based shoe company which is a subsidiary of Nike, is suing 31 different companies that include both retailers and manufacturers for allegedly ripping off its Chuck Taylor all star.

The top retailers have been sued by Converse for the unauthorized use of certain "elements" that are typical to the company, like the shoes rubber soles and black stripes in knockoff versions. Some of the companies named in the suit are Walmart, Fila, Ralph Lauren, Kmart and Skechers.

Urban Outfitters’ Shares fall 15%

Shares of an American multinational clothing corporation, Urban Outfitters fell nearly 15% on Friday after investors received warning from the apparel retailer that third-quarter earnings would be hurt by declining sales.

The stock dropped to its lowest since July 2012, closing down $4.94, or 14.29%, to $29.62. The warning increased worries that teens will avoid the company's fashions at the time of the essential holiday season.

Activists have asked Ann Inc, women's apparel retailer, to explore a sale. On Monday, Engine Capital LLP and Red Alder LLC announced that they both have sent a combined letter to the board of directors.

In the letter, the hedge funds have shared that even after having discussion over future of the company the management has not taken the decision to explore a sale. The hedge funds expressed their disappointment with the company. Both of them in unison own more than 1% of outstanding shares of Ann.

Online retailer Amazon.com has blocked pre-orders for Walt Disney movies and media reports suggest that the company could be facing another contract dispute in near future. Amazon is already in trouble with some publishers including Hachette Book Group due to contract issues.

Amazon has blocked pre-orders for Walt Disney blockbuster movies including "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", "Maleficent" and some other titles. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Maleficent are still available on the Amazon online streaming service.
