Comet chased by spacecraft Rosetta is Duck-shaped

Comet chased by spacecraft Rosetta is Duck-shaped

Back in 2004, Rosetta spacecraft of the European Space Agency was sent on a mission to study the 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet. The spacecraft has recently reached its final target and surprisingly, it has revealed that 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko comet is a contact binary comet.

Contact binary consists of two differently sized nuclei fused together i. e. it is a class of object with two distinct and different segments. This weird and unusual shape of the comet 67P has been compared to the shape of a duck by the ESA.

Ocean Bacteria Produces Compounds Identical to Toxic Fire Retardants

Ocean Bacteria Produces Compounds Identical to Toxic Fire Retardants

As per a new study, compounds that are identical to man-made toxic fire retardants found in sofas, clothing and electrical goods are produced by a common type of ocean bacteria. The microbes belong to a family called Pseudoalteromonas. They are found in habitats as wide-raging as sea grasses, marine sediments and corals.

Researchers were used to think until now that the environmentally-unfriendly compounds they produce were all man-made. These compounds are known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

ESA’s SWARM Reveals Most Recent Changes in Earth’s Magnetic Field

European Space Agency's (ESA) SWARM mission has confirmed earth's magnetic North Pole shift. Launched in November 2013, SWARM is providing detailed information about the working of earth's magnetic field.

The SWARM comprises three 9-metre satellites orbiting the planet at the altitudes of 300 to 530 km. Its goal is to observe earth's magnetic fields and changes taking place in it.
