About 4,000 jobs can be lost if Massmart exchanges only 1% of its sales to imports coming from domestic suppliers, one study supported by South Africa's economic development and agricultural departments.

The report is part of one of the several documents to be delivered to the tribunal this week regarding the government hearing on Wal-Mart's $2.3 billion bid in order to obtain 51% of the South African retailer. The report also stated that if Wal-Mart enters into South Africa, the working conditions at Massmart can get worse.

SA tribunal extends hearing on Wal-Mart

The hearing on the Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s (WMT) proposed $2.4 billion offer is going to be held in the coming week. South Africa's Competition Tribunal has added an extra day to this process. This deal gives an offer to buy a controlling stake in African retailer Massmart Holdings Ltd. (MSM.JO).

The Competition Tribunal has said that the hearing will start from 22nd of the March and will continue till 25th of March. In this hearing, they would discuss about the evidence and testimony from the Economic Development Department, unions and organizations representing small business.

Massmart votes in favor of Wal-Mart takeover

Yesterday, shareholders of general retailer Massmart voted awesomely in favour of the firm being acquired by American retail giant Wal-Mart. However, an alliance of trade unions opposing the deal has promised to take its fight against the take over to South Africa's competition authorities.

Wal-Mart's cash offer for the fifty one percent of Massmart take over at one hundred and forty eight a share received the support of 97,67% of votes.

The International Chief Executive officer of Wal-Mart Stores Inc, Doug McMillon stated that the biggest retailer of the world can see more growth potential in the developing markets than in European countries.

While giving an interview in the program called In Business of Bloomberg Television McMilion was found stating that China is on the top of the list with Brazil taking up the second place. He further stated that Wal-Mart Stores Inc a retail firm based on Bentonville of Arkansas is waiting patiently to pave its path of expansion in Russia.
