On Tuesday, IBM announce a notable improvement to the 'phase-change memory' (PCM) technology, underscoring a breakthrough which could speed up electronic devices by transitioning them standard RAM and flash to a much speedier and more reliable type of storage.

PCM is a kind of non-volatile optical storage which works by manipulating the behavior of chalcogenide glass, which is how data is stored on rewriteable Blue-ray discs. Though the PCM technology has been in development for years, the key issues with the technology thus far have been limited capacity and high cost.
