In a move which underscores a potential effort by bigwig automaker Hyundai to up its fuel game, a Nikkei report -- via Motor Trend -- has revealed that the automaker is planning to bring about a substantial increase in range for its hydrogen-powered Tucson, the company’s five-seat crossover.

According to the report, Hyundai is working on a new fuel cell SUV which will apparently have the capability to offer up to 30 percent more range as compared to its predecessor.

In a statement released on Thursday, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said that bigwig South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor has agreed to pay a penalty of $17.4 million for the delay on its part in reporting a brake defect in the Genesis luxury cars.

According to the NHTSA statement, Hyundai was aware of the defect - which involves corrosion in critical brake system - since 2012; but instead of issuing a prompt recall of the affected Genesis models, the company asked the dealers to fix the problem without giving any explanation.

According to an Autonews report, recently-released documents by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have revealed that nearly 883,000 Sonata mid-sized sedans are being recalled by Hyundai Motor Co. in the US and Puerto Rico.

The Sonata sedans affected by the recall announced by Hyundai include vehicles from model years 2011-14. About the reason leading to the recall of the Sonata sedans, the NHTSA documents have revealed that the recalled vehicles have a potential defect in transmission-shift cable which can increase the risk of a crash.

On Tuesday South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co marked the expansion of its market for alternative zero-emission electric vehicles by launching its hydrogen fuel-cell car - the company's hydrogen-powered Tucson crossover - in the US market.

Hyundai launched its hydrogen fuel-cell car in the US in a special ceremony at the Tustin Hyundai dealership in California. According to the automaker, the debut of its hydrogen fuel-cell cars in US marks the commercial launch of mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in the country.
